Paul was one of the few UK DJs to be on the Motown freebies list, and worked in the California Ballroom in Dunstable on Friday and Saturday nights as well as their nightclub The Devil’s Den/Didoz where he found his love of soul music.
As one of the stalwarts of the Cali in the early to mid 70s , Paul helped the place gain the nickname Soul City and worked with many of the great acts like James Brown, The Temptations, Jr Walker & The All Stars and many more. Paul even met Bob Marley at The Cali in 1972 when he was touring with Johnny Nash as a guest performing with The Wailers too on a handful of gigs.
Giving up the DJ scene in 1978, claiming it was becoming dangerous from too many late nights!
In 2002, the website dedicated to The California Ballroom came on-line which brought him and his trusty 45s back to the music business in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire. He now is part of The California Ballroom Roadshow team in Bedford and plays many gigs in Northampton for Northern Soul events.
The SOUL STEW RADIO SHOW is all about the very best in Classic Soul & Motown, Northern Soul and just that touch of Disco and has been successful for a number of years now and it’s always great to get feedback from listeners with music suggestions.
